Medicine Buddha

The Medicine Buddha is blue in color, seated in lotus pose upon a moon disc resting upon a many petalled lotus. He wears the three monastic robes; his right hand is holding a Myrobalan medicine plant and his left hand holding a begging bowl containing esoteric healing substances.

The Mantra of the Medicine Buddha

In Tibetan buddhism, mantras are constructed from “seed syllables” which unlike words of mundane  language  have several increasingly profound layers of meaning  “locked” within them.  In the practice of tantra,  verbal recitation of mantra  is the means of both invoking and unlocking and ultimately realizing the deeper levels of meaning of the mantra through the effects of the sounds of the seed syllables upon the subtle physical elements of our awareness.  In the case of the Medicine Buddha,  memorizing and reciting the mantra will simultaneously emanate healing  energy into  all directions of space as well as deepen the manifestation of the medicine Buddha’s healing presence within you. This  in turn leads to a state of non-dual awareness in which the practitioner is completely at one with the Medicine Buddha.

The short Mantra of the medicine buddha is transliterated as

TADYATHA OM BHAISHAJYE BHAISHAJYE MAHABHAISHAJYE RAJA SAMUDGATE SVAHA

Phonetically the mantra is pronounced as

TEYATHA OM BEKANZE BEKANZE MAHA BEKANZE RADZA SAMUGATE SOHA

Practice the short mantra of the Medicine Buddha

Special permission or transmission is not required to practice the mantra of the medicine Buddha and receive the healing benefits of the practice.    If you find the mantra practice helpful and inspiring and want to access the more profound levels of meaning  and healing it is recommended that you seek a “Lung” or transmission of the Medicine Buddha from a Tibetan lama; that in turn requires a commitment and dedication to the practice over time, whereby you and all sentient beings will be able to accumulate benefit from the healing energy of the Medicine Buddha.

Brief notes on how to practice in more detail are available for download from the Help-desk forum based upon the commentary and instruction  from my own root teacher, Dudjom Rinpoche, who revealed a short root text for practicing Medicine Buddha – which is published (see side bar)  and recommended if you would like to go deeper into the practice.
